What are the different types of the working holiday maker program? 

There are two subclasses of Working Holiday Maker Program visa, which are Work and Holiday Visa Australia (Subclass 462) and Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417):

Work and Holiday Visa Australia Subclass 462

This Work and Holiday Visa Australia is for those who want an extended holiday and want to work in Australia to fund it. This visa lets tertiary-educated people travel and work in Australia for up to 12 months. Applicants can also study for up to 4 months and travel to and from Australia multiple times. 

Working Holiday Visa Subclass 417

Working Holiday Visa Australia is for those who want an extended holiday and want to work in Australia to fund their holiday. With this visa, an applicant can stay up to 12 months in Australia, do short-term work or study for up to 4 months, and travel to and from Australia multiple times.

What are the eligibility requirements for visitor visa subclass 462 and subclass 417?

Age requirements

Young adults must be 18 to 30 years old (inclusive) to be eligible for subclass 462 and 417 visas. However, the age limit to be eligible for a visa subclass 417 is 35 years for certain countries.

First Work and Holiday Visa Australia

The person must not have previously entered Australia on subclass 462 or 417 visa. For becoming eligible for a second Work and Holiday Maker Program visa, the applicant must do three months of specified subclass 462 work or specified subclass 417 work. Moreover, applicants from certain countries must have a letter of support from their governments to be eligible for visa subclass 462. The applicant must apply online from outside Australia to meet the eligibility criteria for a second Working Holiday Visa Australia subclass 417.

Second Work and Holiday Visa Australia

The person must have previously entered Australia either on a visa subclass 462 or subclass 417. If in Australia, the person must hold a substantive visa, or their last substantive visa should have expired less than 28 days ago. To be eligible for Second Work and Holiday Visa Australia, the applicant must have completed three months of specified subclass 462 work or specified subclass 417 work. To qualify for a third Work and Holiday Visa Australia, an applicant must do six months of specified subclass 462 work or specified subclass 417 work.

Third Work and Holiday Visa Australia

Applicant must have previously entered Australia on a Second Subclass 462 or subclass 417 visa. If in Australia, the person must hold a substantive visa, or their last substantive visa should have expired less than 28 days ago. They must have undertaken six months of specified subclass 462 or specified subclass 417 work.

Passport requirements

The applicant must have a passport from an eligible country. 

Character requirement

The applicant must meet Australia's character requirements. The applicant must be of good character, remain of good character and must pass the character test.

Dependent children 

The dependent children of the applicant must not accompany them.

Health requirement

The applicant must meet Australia's health requirements. However, the Department of Home Affairs might also ask that other non-migrating family members to meet the Australian health requirements.

Previous visa cancellations & refusals

The person must not have had a visa cancelled, or a previous application refused.

Acceptance of Australian Values statement

If the applicant is 18 years or older, they must sign the Australian Values statement.

Pay debt to the Australian government

If you or your family member (even those who have not applied for a Visitor Visa Australia with you) owe any money to the government, then you or they must have paid it or arranged to pay it back. 

Funding arrangements

An applicant must have enough money to support themselves in Australia and leave Australia.

The applicant must meet the eligibility criteria to apply for visa 462. The person applying for the First Work and Holiday Visa 462 or First Working Holiday Visa 417 must be outside Australia when they apply and when their application is decided upon. The Second/Third Work and Holiday Visa or Second/Third Working Holiday Visa applicant can be in or outside Australia when they apply for the visa.
