What does Temporary Graduate Visa Subclass 485 lets you do?

On a 485 visa, a person can stay in Australia. The person can also travel, work or study in Australia during their stay. This visa gives an opportunity to an international student to extend their stay in Australia and gain work experience, so that they can potentially apply for a skilled or employer sponsored visa in future. 

What are the different types of streams of Temporary Graduate Visa Subclass 485?

There are four streams under a 485 visa:

  • Graduate Work Stream
  • Post-Study Work Stream
  • Second Post-Study Work Stream
  • Replacement Stream

Graduate Work Stream

The graduate work stream visa 485 is for international students who have recently completed graduation with skills and qualifications relevant to certain occupations in Australia. On this visa, you can stay in Australia for usually 18 months. However, temporarily the stay period has been increased to 24 months. You can travel, work and study on the Temporary Graduate Visa subclass 485 Graduate Work Stream. The applicant must have the skills and qualifications Australia needs to be eligible for this visa.   1. Nominated one occupation on the MLTSSL list
  2. and have a diploma, degree or trade qualification closely related to that occupation.
  3. be assessed by a relevant assessing authority.

Post-Study Work Stream

This Temporary Graduate 485 subclass visa stream is for international students who have recently completed graduation with a degree or higher from an Australian institution. On this visa, a person can stay for 2 to 4 years after finishing their studies. 
Masters by Coursework or Bachelor Degree: 2 years
Masters by Research: 3 years
PhD: 4 years
 

Second Post-Study Work Stream

This visa stream is for Temporary Graduate Visa (First Post-Study Work Stream or Replacement Stream) holders who have completed their graduation degree from an Australian institution located in a regional area. On this visa stream, a person can stay in Australia for one year or two year depending upon where they have lived in designated regional area for at least 2 years immediately before applying for the second Temporary Graduate post-study work stream visa. This stream is available only if the person: 

  • Was granted the first Temporary Graduate visa 485 in the post-study work stream; or
  • Was granted a Temporary Graduate visa in the replacement stream on the basis of holding their first Temporary Graduate Visa in the post-study work stream.

The applicant must continue to hold a valid Temporary Graduate visa 485 in the post-study work stream or a Temporary Graduate visa in the replacement stream when they apply. 

Replacement Stream

The Australian government grants the Replacement stream visa to current and former Temporary Graduate visa holders who lost time on their original visa because of COVID-19 travel restrictions. The applicant can stay in Australia for 18 months to five years with this visa stream. The person can travel, study, or work in Australia during their stay. You must apply for this visa stream before January 01, 2027. The applicant can also bring their family with them. To apply for this visa, you must:

  • hold a Temporary Graduate visa as the main holder;
  • or have held a Temporary Graduate visa as the main holder and currently hold a Bridging visa A or Bridging visa B or hold another substantive visa. 

Extended Post-Study Work Rights from 1st Jul 2023

Post-study work rights for international students who have graduated from an Australian higher education provider, will be extended to assist in addressing skills shortages.
A list of eligible occupations and eligible qualifications have been released, targeting health, teaching, engineering and agricultural fields.
The extended work rights come into effect from 1 July 2023. Current settings will be increased by two years for each graduate level, from:
• Two years to four years for select Bachelor degrees
• Three years to five years for select Masters degrees
• Four years to six years for all Doctoral degrees.
Existing regional and remote Australia settings will be maintained and where relevant will be eligible for the additional two years.
These targeted skills will be considered on an annual basis and updated as needed in response to the labour market.
Eligible graduates with a valid Temporary Graduate Visa on 1 July 2023 or who apply for a Temporary Graduate Visa after 1 July 2023, will be considered for the two year extension.

What are the eligibility requirements for Temporary Graduate Visa Subclass 485?
 

Health requirements

The person and any family members who apply for a 485 visa with you must meet Australia’s health requirements. The Department of Home Affairs, Australia, might also ask that other non-migrating family members meet the requirement.

English language

The 485 graduate visa applicants must either provide evidence of their English language skills when they apply for a 485 visa or show that they hold a valid passport from the UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand or the Republic of Ireland.
Generally, the evidence is an English language test result. e.g. IELTS, PTE, TOEFL etc. The test results must be at most three years old, and you must have scored 6 as an overall score with a minimum score of 5 in each component in IELTS (or equivalent).

Study Requirement

In the past six months, you must have been awarded at least one degree, diploma or trade qualification to meet the 485 visa study requirement and:

  • The course you studied was a CRICOS-registered course. 
  • The applicant successfully completed all requirements of the course.
  • Your study was in English.
  • The applicant completed their course as a result of at least two academic years of study.
  • The person was physically in Australia for at least 16 calendar months to complete the study.
  • The person held an Australian study visa.

Character requirement

The applicant and any family members who apply for a 485 visa must provide police clearance certificate from the country where they have resided cumulatively for more than 12 months in last 10 years.

Health cover (OVHC)

You and your family members must maintain adequate health insurance for the entire 485 visa duration. This health cover is called OVHC – Overseas Visitor Health Cover and is only available from an approved Australian health insurance provider.

Paid back to the Australian government.

If the 485 visa applicant or any of their family members owe the Australian government any money, they must have paid it back or should have a formal arrangement to pay it back.

Age

The person must be under 50 years of age

Lived in a designated regional area

As a first Temporary Graduate visa holder in the post-study work stream or replacement stream, the applicant must have lived only in a designated regional area for at least two years immediately before they apply for the second Temporary Graduate post-study work stream visa.

Acceptance of Australian Values Statement

If the applicant is 18 years or older, they must sign the Australian values statement.

Study/ Work in a designated regional area

If you worked and/or studied while holding your first Temporary Graduate visa in the post-study work stream or replacement stream, then the work and study must have been done in the designated regional area.

How to apply for Temporary Graduate Work visa subclass 485?

The applicant must be in Australia when they apply and at the time of the decision but should not be in immigration clearance. However, to apply for a Temporary Graduate visa under the replacement stream, they can be in or outside Australia but should not be in immigration clearance. 
You would not be granted this visa if you were previously granted a subclass 485 or 476 visa as a primary visa holder. To apply for this visa, :
• You must have completed your qualification in last 6 months immediately before the day you apply for the visa
• You must have held student Visa in the last 6 months before applying for the visa.
• Your qualification must be CRICOS registered
