This visa allows the applicant to live/stay in Australia for up to 2 years. A person can work and study in Australia; however, they will not receive government support. With Contributory Parent visa 173, a person can apply for a Contributory Parent Permanent 143 visa. An applicant can also enrol in the public health care scheme of Australia.

What are the eligibility requirements for Contributory Parent Temporary Visa subclass 173?

 

Sponsor

You must be sponsored by an eligible sponsor. Usually, an eligible child is a sponsor. In the case where the child is under 18, you can be sponsored by an eligible relative or community organization. The Department of Home Affairs must approve the sponsorship.

Visa requirement

A person cannot apply for Contributory Parent visa 173 if they have already applied for or are holding a Sponsored Parent Temporary subclass 870 visa. 

Health requirements

You and any family members who apply for the Contributory Parent Visa 173 with you must meet Australia’s health requirements. The Department of Home Affairs might also ask that other non-migrating family members meet the requirement.

Balance of Family test

You must meet the balance of the family test, which is:

  1. At least half of your children and step-children are eligible children, or
  2. There are more eligible children living in Australia than in any other single country

Character requirement

You and any family members who apply for Contributory Parent visa 173 with you must meet Australia’s character requirements. The Department of Home Affairs might also ask that other non-migrating family members meet the requirement.

Previous visa cancellations and refusals

The person might not be eligible for visa 173 if they have had a visa cancelled or refused while they were in Australia.

Paid back to the Australian government.

If the applicant or any of their family members owe the Australian government any money, they must have paid it back or should have a formal arrangement to pay it back.

Best interests of the child

The Department of Home Affairs will not grant the 173 visa in case it is not in the best interests of a person under 18. 

Acceptance of Australian Values Statement

If the applicant is 18 years or older, they must sign the Australian Values Statement.
