The Student Guardian visa 590 granted by the Australian government is a temporary visa given to applicants who come to Australia to provide care and support to student visa subclass 500 holders who are below 18 years of age (or older under exceptional circumstances).

What the Student Guardian Visa Subclass 590 lets you do?

Visa 590 allows a guardian to come to Australia to care for one or more than one student. The applicant can learn the English Language Intensive Course (ELICOS) for up to 20 hours per week or other courses or training for up to three months. However, you are not allowed to work while on visa 590 in Australia. The length of the Student Guardian visa subclass 590 is determined by the student visa holder's stay and age. On visa 590, you can travel outside Australia and return as often as you want till the visa is valid, but you cannot leave Australia without the student visa holder until and unless you have made alternative welfare arrangements.

What are the eligibility requirements for the Student Guardian Visa Subclass 590?

Parent, Custodian or Relative

The applicant must be either the student visa holder's parent or a person having the student's custody, or a relative of the student who is aged 21 years or older and is nominated by a parent or person with the student's custody. The 590 visa Australia applicant can provide care and support to a student visa holder who is below 18 years of age or older than 18 years but needs care and support because of exceptional circumstances. For Student Guardian Visa subclass 590, the Department of Home Affairs considers the applicant a relative if they are the student's:

  1. Parent or Step-parent
  2. Sibling or Step-Sibling
  3. Grandparent or Step-Grandparent
  4. Nephew, Niece or Step-Nephew or Step-niece
  5. Uncle, Aunt, Step-uncle or Step-aunt
  6. Child or Step child
  7. Partner

Be able to provide for the student

The visa 590 applicant must be able to provide general welfare, accommodation and support to the student.

Bringing children

The 590 visa Australia applicant will not be granted the visa if any member of their family has not turned six. However, there are some exceptions, such as:

  1. There are compelling and compassionate reasons or
  2. The applicant is 21, and the student visa holder has not turned 18, a grant of the visa would greatly benefit the relationship between the Government of Australia and another country's government, the nomination is supported by a parent or by a person having the student's custody.

Health requirement

The applicant and any family members who apply for visa 590 with the applicant must meet Australia's health requirements. The Department of Home Affairs might also ask that other non-migrating family members meet the requirement.

Welfare arrangements for dependants overseas

The Student Guardian visa subclass 590 applicant must make adequate arrangements for the welfare, support and accommodation of any family member who:

  • Is not coming with them to Australia
  • Is under 18 years of age
  • Does not have a student visa

The Department of Home Affairs considers that a visa 590 applicant has made adequate welfare arrangements for their children aged 6 to 18 years if the children will be living with another parent or custodian or with a relative who is at least 21 years of age.

Character Requirements

The applicant and any family members who apply for this visa with you must meet Australia's character requirements. The Department of Home Affairs might also ask that other non-migrating family members meet the requirement.

Funding Arrangements

The applicant must show the Department of Home Affairs the evidence that they have enough funds to pay for their own, accompanying family members, the student visa holder's stay, and general expenses in Australia. 

Genuine Temporary Entrant

The visa 590 applicant must be a genuine temporary entrant. The person must stay temporarily in Australia and should do things they are allowed to do on the Student Guardian visa subclass 590. The applicant must have substantially complied with the conditions of the last substantive or subsequent bridging visa held by them. You must be a genuine temporary entrant and intend to return to your home country after the student visa holder either:

  1. Completes his/her studies in Australia.
  2. Turn 18 years old.

Adequate health insurance

The visa 590 applicant and their family members must maintain adequate health insurance for the entire visa duration
