The Student Visa subclass 500 lets international students to study, live and work in Australia. Before applying for this visa, students must be accepted for full-time study in a registered course or part of a registered course in a registered education institute in Australia. The course must be a CRICOS-certified course and should be run by a CRICOS-certified provider. The course length will generally determine a student visa's validity period. You can also bring your partner or dependent child with you on a Student visa Australia. The applicant must be six years or older. 

What does the Student Visa Subclass 500 let you do?

This temporary visa allows a person to stay and study in Australia temporarily. You are allowed to work for 48 hours per fortnight (from 1st Jul 2023) if you are studying vocational, bachelors or master’s degree course.  However, you can work for unlimited hours if you are enrolled in a Ph.D. course. You can include your partner or dependant child on your Student Visa subclass 500 application.

What are the eligibility requirements for Student Visa subclass 500?

Be of a certain age

The school student (but the student who is not a participant in a secondary school student exchange program) should be aged six or older to apply for the Australian Student visa subclass 500. Moreover, you must be:

  1. Less than 17 years of age when you begin Year 9
  2. Less than 18 Years of age when you begin Year 10
  3. Less than 19 years of age when you begin Year 11
  4. Less than 20 years of age when you begin Year 12

Course of Study

You must provide evidence of enrolment in the course of study when you apply for the Student Visa subclass 500. The study must be in a full-time course registered on CRICOS (Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students).

Health Requirements

You and any family members who apply for the Student Visa subclass 500 with you must meet Australia's health requirements. The Department of Home Affairs might also ask that other non-migrating family members meet the requirement.

Welfare Arrangements

If you are under 18, you must have adequate welfare arrangements in place during your stay in Australia.

Character Requirements

English Language

You should provide evidence of your English language skills when you apply for the Student Visa subclass 500. However, educational institutions might place a higher requirement for entry to a course.

• Name and contact details of a person who can confirm your employment circumstances
 

Ties to home country/ country of residence

• You need to provide evidence of financial, family or social ties. You must show you have major incentives to return to your home country

Economic situation in home country/ country of residence

• The documents showing employment or business activities for a year before lodging an application
• The potential employment offers. It includes salary and other benefits  after the completion of the course
• Your income tax return or bank statements

Employment opportunities in a third country

• The potential employment offers, including salary and other benefits, after course completion 

Situations in your home country (or country of residence)

• The reason behind not studying in your country of residence or region if there is a similar course available
• Your ties to your home country that support an intention to return to your home country after finishing the course
• Your economic situation
• Your military service commitments
• The political and civil unrest in your home country

Potential situation in Australia

• Your ties to the Australian continent that present a strong incentive to stay back in Australia
• The level of knowledge of the proposed course of study and education provider
• The previous study and qualifications
• Planned living arrangements
• Financial stability

Value of the course to your future

• If the course is consistent with your current education level 
• If the course is relevant to past or proposed future employment in your home/residence country or a third country
• The expected salary and other benefits in your home/residence country or a third country that you can obtain with your qualifications from the proposed course of study

Your immigration history

• Your previous visa applications for Australia or other countries
• Visa refusals or cancellations

Best interests of the child

This visa might only be granted to an applicant under 18 if it is in their best interests.

Health Insurance (OSHC)

You and your family members must maintain adequate health insurance for the entire Student Visa subclass 500 duration. This health cover is called OSHC – Overseas Student Health Cover and is only available from an approved Australian health insurance provider.
